At the suggestion of the Stewardship committee in 2013, the St. Paul’s vestry consented unanimously to set a new goal for community involvement. Using seed money provided by the 2013 Capital Campaign the St. Francis Fund was formed. The St. Francis Fund committee is charged with raising and disbursing $1,000,000 in a span of ten years. This money is to be used “to nurture, sustain and affirm programs and projects……that speak to the despair, suffering, anger and need in the lives of so many.” The program is based on the life and mission of St. Francis of Assisi, whose rule was “To follow the teachings of our Lord Jesus Christ and to walk in his footsteps.” It has been argued that no one else in history has been as dedicated as Francis to imitate the life, and carry out the work of Christ, in Christ’s own way. With God’s grace and through the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, St Paul’s will be the fourth Episcopal church in the southeast to implement this program. The other Episcopal churches are in Charlotte, North Carolina, Columbus, Georgia and Florence, Alabama.

Grant Request Criteria
St. Paul’s has established a fund to be used for the purpose of assisting deserving local and other charitable groups whose devotion to the people they serve best reflects the aspirations expressed in the Prayer of St. Francis of Assisi:
“Lord, make us instruments of your peace. Where there is hatred, let us sow love, where there is injury, pardon; where there is discord, union; where there is doubt, faith; where there is despair, hope; where there is darkness, light; where there is sadness, joy. Grant that we may not so much seek to be consoled as to console; to be understood as to understand; to be loved as to love. For it is in giving that we received; it is in pardoning that we are pardoned; and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life. Amen.”
